Bikram Choudhury was born in India and was introduced to the discipline of yoga at the age of three. Bikram’s guru, Bishnu Ghosh, trained him to go on to win numerous Hatha Yoga Championships, weight training competitions, and running races. Bikram’s guru was the brother of the celebrated Paramahansa Yogananda, author of ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’, and part of the lineage leading directly down from Patanjali, who is believed to have created the original Hatha Yoga postures thousands of years ago.
Bikram was brought to Hollywood during the 1970s by Shirley MacClaine, who was very impressed by him when she met him in Mumbai, India. Bikram went on to take Hollywood by storm with his yoga, and his dedicated students include Madonna, Venus and Serena Williams, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Lady Gaga, David Beckham, and even Richard Nixon, who famously granted Bikram a green card after Bikram healed his knee injury with the yoga.
